Daniel R. Craig is currently in his fourteenth year as Director of Choral and Instrumental Activities at the University of Southern Indiana. At USI, Mr. Craig serves as the conductor of the USI Chamber Choir, the USI Women's Choir and the USI Jazz Ensemble. Daniel also serves as a lecturer in the area of Music History and is the faculty sponsor of the USI Medieval Society.
Under his direction, the USI Chamber Choir have toured throughout the United States, Canada, Poland, Germany, and Ireland. They have won several awards and have participated in many festivals and competitions.
In 1993, Mr. Craig founded the USI Concert Choir. At that time 22 singers from various fields of study came together to begin a growing tradition on campus. In the last three years this group has grown to a roster of over 50 singers and has performed music ranging from Gregorian Chant, 18th Century Masses and Litanies to contemporary Spirituals and part songs. In 1996 the USI Concert Choir joined with five other area church choirs to perform John Rutter's Requiem in a chorus of over 100 singers. In 2000 this ensemble was converted into the USI Women's Choir which now offers an eclectic repertory of music for women.
Mr. Craig also is in his eighth year as Director of Music at Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville. At Old North UMC, Daniel directs the Chancel Choir and Youth Choir. He also is the director of the Evansville Ecumenical Choir, a mixed chorus of sixty singers from over thirty area churches. Daniel has served as director of music ministries in the United Methodist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, and Roman Catholic churches for the past twenty two years.
Mr. Craig also plays recorder, tin whistle, and sings locally in the traditional Irish group "Beyond the Pale." He also is a substitute saxophonist for the "Templeaires," a 1930's era big band sponsored by Temple United Methodist Church, Evansville.
Mr. Craig holds degrees from Murray State University (BA-Voice and Conducting 1986) and the University of Illinois (MM Choral Conducting 1989). Prior to coming to USI, Mr. Craig was the Director of Choirs at Casper College, Casper, Wyoming. He has served as the guest conductor of the State of Wyoming Community Chorus, the Casper All-City High School Chorus, the Cantores Malborienses and Lutnia Choirs of Malbork, Poland, the Adam Mickiewicz University Chamber Choir, Poznan, Poland, and has conducted many clinics throughout the United States, Canada, and Poland, in university, church, secondary school choirs, and community choruses.
Daniel enjoys music composition, audio recording, painting, and is an avid bass fisherman. He is married to Clara Meadows Craig and has one daughter, Jennifer Anne Craig.
